I've read a lot and it gets tiresome to come across the same article, written by different people using different words.

The basic premise of my annoyance is the way people say that ITIL, if used incorrectly can be bad for an organizations IT department. YES - it can - there it has been said.

If you try to shove ITIL down the organizational throat, then the natural reflex is to gag and throw it up !! I appreciate this is a vivid analogy, but the point is clear. Something good can be bad if administered and used in the wrong way.

My approach is easy. Take ITIL, throw in a whole lot of commonsense and reality and voila you're on the way to a practical implementat that will stand the test of time long after you've gone.
